Equality NC Calls on Gov. McCrory to Reconsider Collins Appointment

Equality NC today called on Gov. Pat McCrory to reconsider his appointment of Buddy Collins to the North Carolina Board of Education in light of significant concerns regarding Collins’ opposition to anti-bullying measures aimed at protecting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students.

Buncombe County Adds Domestic Partner Benefits

Buncombe County commissioners voted 4-3 on Tuesday to offer domestic partner benefits to the same-sex partners of county employees. The Western North Carolina county, home to county seat Asheville, becomes the fourth county in North Carolina to offer such benefits to LGBT couples, following Durham, Mecklenburg and Orange Counties. Several cities, including Asheville, already offer domestic partner benefits.

Equality NC Joins 27 Organizations in Multi-state Brief Urging Supreme Court to Strike Down DOMA and Prop 8

Equality NC joined 27 other organizations from 23 states by signing on to an Amicus Curiae (“friend of the court”) Brief filed today in the Hollingsworth v. Perry and United States v. Windsor cases currently before the Supreme Court. Hollingsworth v. Perry would strike down California’s Proposition 8, prohibiting marriage equality, and US v. Windsor would strike down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).
