Equality North Carolina Announces 40th Anniversary Gala Celebration

The landmark birthday makes ENC the oldest statewide organization in the country dedicated to LGBTQ rights.

Raleigh – On Sept. 14, 2019, Equality North Carolina will celebrate the organization’s 40th anniversarywith a massive gala celebration at The Cookery in Durham. The event will bring together LGBTQ leaders from across the state, reflect on the past four decades of work by Equality NC and look towards the future of LGBTQ rights in North Carolina.

The founders of Equality North Carolina will be honored at the 40th Anniversary Gala celebration. ENCbegan in 1979 as the NC Human Rights Fund, an organization committed to providing legal assistance to gays and lesbians facing discriminatory enforcement of the Crime Against Nature Law. Today, Equality NC is a social justice organization that works efficiently at both the grassroots and the grass tops levels to achieve equitable treatment of all LGBTQ+ North Carolinians.

As Equality North Carolina turns forty, the organization’s focus moves towards that of a broader social justice organization dedicated to fighting for the rights and protections of all marginalized North Carolinians.

Equality NC Executive Director Kendra R. Johnson said:

“North Carolina has changed a lot over the past forty years, and Equality North Carolina has been there every step of the way. We’re beyond thrilled to honor the legacy of decades of work by our state’s fierce advocates, community members and politicians, all while lifting up the incredible breadth of work still to be done to achieve full, lived equality in North Carolina.”
