Equality NC's Sgro Elected to National Board

Minneapolis, M.N. – (August 2, 2014) On Saturday, Equality NC's Executive Director Chris Sgro was elected as a member representative to the board of the Equality Federation, a national alliance of organizations working for LGBT equality in every state. The Saturday election took place at the conclusion of the Equality Federation's 2014 Summer Meeting held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, July 30, through August 2.

Sgro joins Amber Royster, Michael Nordman, and Monica Meyer as the newest state-leaders on the Equality Federation board.

The addition of Equality NC's Sgro and other state leaders to the board will allow the Federation to continue serving state-based organizations to the highest degree and advancing equality in the nationwide communities we call home. These new leaders will represent the interests and needs of member groups like Equality NC in order to better equip the Equality Federation to be the strategic pro-equality partner to the state-level movement.

In a statement from Minneapolis, Sgro expressed his excitement to play a leadership role in a national organization working to build state-based groups.

"I couldn't be more honored or excited by this opportunity," said Sgro. "Being present in Minneapolis this week was a unique chance to share ideas and resources across state lines in a national forum, while also keeping the work focused on our respective states. This is an important lesson I'll bring to my own work with the Equality Federation, and, in turn, I hope to be better equipped to focus on all-important issues for our community, including non-discrimination, transgender health work, and youth advocacy in North Carolina."

According to Sgro, the Federation's most important impact on the state-based equality movement will be providing leadership on the way forward after marriage.

"As marriage sweeps across the nation, including here in the South, in the next few years, I know the Federation is already providing leadership as we look at issues that we still face in most parts of country before we achieve lived equality," said Sgro. "Whether it is through bringing national attention to issues like employment non-discrimination or connecting us to successful programs being run in other states around school safety, the Federation will play an important convening and connecting role in the years to come."
